The Corvette was the base of an extremely fruitful collaboration between Callaway Cars and Deutschman Design. Callaway found in Deutschman's body designs the perfect complement to their own mechanical wizardry.
|
Their first project together was code-named Sledgehammer. The mission of this one-off was to become the world's fastest street car. Deutschman's task was to design and produce the prototype bodywork so that the car would be aerodynamically stable up to 250 mph (over 400 km/hr!), have sufficient air intakes for various functions, be an aesthetic triumph and be easy to put into production.
The car world was stunned when the Sledgehammer was tested on a closed circuit at 254 miles per hour making it the fastest street car ever. |

 |
The basic body design of the Sledgehammer, called Aerobody, was then adapted to all production Callaway Corvettes. It is still enjoying successful sales after 6 years (over 600 units) of production. Critics have unanimously complimented the Aerobody's design.

|
Callaway then called on Deutschman Design to produce a wild, open-top version of the Aerobody as its flagship. Simply called Speedster, it featured a unique greenhouse that wrapped around onto the rear deck and blended into the 2 rear headrest extensions. Introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Speedster was swamped with international media attention and sold to elitist auto collectors and Hollywood celebrities.
In early 1994, Callaway Cars decided to enter a heavily modified Corvette in the world renown LeMans 24 Hour race of the same year. Naturally, the vehicle needed radically modified bodywork to cater to the specific needs of an endurance racing car...good aerodynamics, large fixed headlights, sufficient air intakes...plus it had to look great. The Callaway LM, with Deutschman-designed bodywork, not only earned pole position at LeMans but it went on to win a number of prestigious international races in the 1994 season. |

After canvassing many design studios, Callaway settled on that of Canadian Paul Deutschman.
ROAD & TRACK
It's the handsomest Corvette remake we've ever seen. The stunning exterior provided plenty of visual horsepower too. We couldn't have attracted more attention if we had Madonna along for the ride.
CAR AND DRIVER

Because Reeves (Callaway) wanted a serious aerodynamic restyle, he sought the services of stylist Paul Deutschman from Montreal... Paul came through with an absolutely stunning package.
VETTE MAGAZINE

From its voluptuous Paul Deutschman- designed bodywork to the gentle curve of its intercooler tubing, the Callaway Corvette is as much art as science.

MOTOR TREND

Rarement aura-t-on vu une aussi belle Corvette. On doit son dessin au nouveau prodige de la marque, le Canadien Paul Deutschman.
OPTION AUTO

Defying all the laws of physics, this automobile (Speedster) became a powerful freeway magnet.
